John Andrew Arrington, 92, of the 900 block of Sacony Street, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014. A native of Winston-Salem, NC, he retired as a ship surveyor from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 31 years and also retired from Quality Boats, Inc. as a quality control manager. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served during World War II. He was a member of Cottage Place United Methodist Church, Portsmouth Masonic Lodge #100, A.F. & A.M. and the Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies.
Mr. Arrington was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Jane Lucille Mackey Arrington; his parents, Gene C. and Fannie Alspaugh Arrington; and a sister, Margaret E. “Bitsie” Miller.
Survivors include two sons, John A. Arrington II and wife Barbara of Smithfield and David C. Arrington and wife Marie of Portsmouth; a brother, Howard Arrington of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, John M. Arrington, Cammie J. Lewis, Amber M. Fox and Amanda M. Smiley; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26, in Greenlawn Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Andrew Book. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Friday from 7-8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cottage Place United Methodist Church.
