Obituary for Brenda Crockett McGee

CHESAPEAKE- Brenda McGee, 64, died November 27, 2019. A native of Norfolk, she was predeceased by a brother, Butch Crockett. As an educator, she lived a life of service helping those with developmental disabilities.

Brenda was born July 28th 1955, to Harry and Joyce Crockett. She graduated in the class of 1973 from Tidewater Christian. In her youth, she enjoyed riding horses and worked at the Lazy M Ranch. She was also the Horseback Director at Ridgecrest Boys Camp for the summer of 1976.

She received a Bachelor’s in Special Education from Old Dominion University and a Master’s in Special Education with a concentration in early childhood education. She worked at the City of Chesapeake Integrated Behavioral Health for 31 years until she retired in 2015. She started in the Infant Intervention Program as a Service Coordinator before she was promoted to the Supervisor of that Department. In 2007, she became the Program Director for the Intellectual Disability Division.

She led with quiet strength and passion for the people she served. She was a fierce advocate who would often go to Richmond to fight for funding. She was resourceful and creative, finding innovative ways to provide services to those who needed them. For example, she illustrated a Parent’s Guide to the Chesapeake Infant Intervention Program using her family as models. Her crowning achievement was opening two Intermediate Care Facilities that will provide homes and services for the intellectually disabled for years to come.

Those that knew Brenda knew she was a loving and dedicated mother who managed a successful career while also being a single parent. When she did have free time, she enjoyed reading fantasy and science fiction novels such as the Chronicles of Narnia, the Lord of the Rings and the Ender Series. Brenda was multitalented, ambidextrous and could draw, frail a banjo and clog, though not at the same time. She also had a twisted sense of humor.

Brenda is survived by her husband Eugene McGee; daughter, Aimee Yanez and partner Ryan Hoagland; son, Carlton Northern and wife Callie; and four grandchildren, Shane Northern, Westley Northern, James Yanez and Lucas Hoagland.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 3 PM in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, followed immediately with a pot-luck reception at her son’s house, 3100 Verne Ave. Portsmouth, VA. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Association (
