Obituary for Dr. Richard T. Deaton

PORTSMOUTH - Dr. Richard Thomas Deaton went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 26, 2018. He is survived by his son Thomas and his wife, Shauna, daughter, Virginia Catherine “Sissy”, as well as his brothers John and Bob and their wives Joanne and Michelle, his niece, Amber Berry and best friend and constant companion, Kathleen Gookin.

Born 18 April 1938 to Samuel King Deaton and Virginia Lovegrove (Deaton), Richard was baptized in Simonsdale Presbyterian Church. Sam owned his own landscaping business. With Richard helping him plant azaleas, beautifying many yards in Portsmouth, landscaping would become a favorite hobby of Richard’s for years to come. He would draw much inspiration from one of his favorite locations, Williamsburg.

Richard enlisted in the Air Force as a First Lieutenant and was stationed in the Philippines for two years. His tenure fostered a life-long passion for travel, later making scores of excursions to almost every continent.

Graduating from William and Mary in Norfolk and President of his class, he continued his education with the Medical College of Virginia, earning his Medical Degree after his residency at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. He then launched a very successful medical practice.

A very well-respected doctor in Portsmouth, Richard would remain in practice for over four decades He held the title of President of staff for Maryview Hospital. In later years he attended at the Veteran’s Hospital in Hampton.

He married Patricia Frazier; they would have two children, Thomas and Sissy.

Retiring in 2014, Richard could be seen in his Florida room, admiring the beautiful water-view and assorted wild life. Also continuing another passion - “antiquing” Richard enjoyed adding to his rich collection of furniture and accessories in his home.

He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and attended Monumental United Methodist Church. He is dearly-loved by his family and hundreds of former patients.

A celebration of Richard’s life will be conducted at 1 PM on Saturday, December 1, 2018 in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel by Rev. Celeste Heath. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Sturtevant Event Center.
