Obituary for Cynthia Linker Deller

Cynthia Linker Deller, 61, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. She was born on August 27, 1958. She was preceded in death by her son Stephen M. Deller, father Stephen Linker, and grandmother Lillian Phillips. She is survived by her mother Beverley K. Byrd, daughter Layla Gray (Gordon), and grandchildren Kayden and Amalia Gray.

Cindy was born in Portsmouth, VA and was a graduate of Manor High School. Growing up she loved to sing and spent years singing with the Manor Singers and dancing ballet. As an adult her creative side was expressed through her needle point and quilt making. Cindy was known to win more than a few ribbons at the Charles county fair for her works of art.

People who knew Cindy across her life unanimously say she had an incredible sense of humor. Friends and loved ones have said she was a hoot who left them in stitches. People also concur she was a giver and caretaker of all. She volunteered for many years as an EMT with Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department and Charles County Medic 1. She frequently stayed up late to make pulled pork BBQ and her famous potato salad for families grieving the loss of a loved one in her community. Known as “Momma D” to the friends of her children, the door to her home was always open and her home became their home.

As a mother of two young children, she put herself through nursing school in the evenings after working full days as an in-home childcare provider. Her first job as an RN was at what was then called Physicians Memorial Hospital in LaPlata, MD. She later went to work at George Washington Hospital in DC and eventually an oncology office in Southern MD. In the hospital setting she worked on various units but was known to say cardiac care/cardiac intensive care were her favorites.

Cindy’s faith and love of God played a big role in her life. She was an active memory of churches in MD and VA. She served proudly as a Deaconess of First Presbyterian Church in Portsmouth, VA for several years.

Cindy loved music, crime/detective shows, reading, playing cards with her friends (especially the game Hand Foot), and time with her grandchildren. She was fiercely independent and strong.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 AM on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the Sturtevant Event Center, 5100 Portsmouth Blvd, Portsmouth, VA 23701.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Society of Suicide Prevention, an organization very important to Cindy following her son’s, Steve’s, passing. Cindy frequently raised money for her son’s memoriam team, “Steve’s Rebellion.” You can connect to Steve’s Rebellion page and make a contribution in Cindy’s honor through:
